For years, this remarkable Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox) skull remained tucked away in our private collection—held back because of its structural damage. But as our mission around Wearable Conservation and ethical osteology has grown, so has our belief that damage doesn't diminish value; it tells a story.
 
Salvaged from Florida’s roadways, this softshell specimen was already delicate from its time in the wild. Softshell turtle skulls feature notoriously intricate, lightweight bone structures, and during the delicate extraction process, the fragile cranial bones suffered additional fractures. Rather than setting it aside, we gave it the exact same meticulous care, cleaning, and multi-month degreasing regimen as our pristine specimens.
 
The result is an exceptionally bright, bone-white skull that showcases the unique interior architecture and elongated snout of a Florida softshell turtle. While commercial supply houses often charge upwards of $50 for pristine specimens half this size, we are offering this piece as an accessible entry point for new collectors, young naturalists, or anyone who appreciates the authentic, one-of-a-kind character of salvaged natural history.

The Specimen: Authentically processed, hand-cleaned Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox) skull with separate lower mandible.
The Condition: As-is salvaged condition featuring natural road impact and extraction fractures; fully sanitized and extensively degreased to a clean, bright white finish.
The Features: Retains its distinctive tan beak sheaths and characteristic wide eye sockets (orbits).
The Dimensions: Substantial specimen measuring approximately 4.5" long by 2.5" wide.
