I'm so excited to share the latest addition to my Trashed Masterpieces series: #15, a reimagining of Egon Schiele's 'Self-Portrait with Lowered Head.' This one was a real journey! Schiele's work is known for its intense texture, those layers upon layers of oil paint. I challenged myself to capture that same tactile quality on a dispensary bag – a fitting canvas, don't you think?
I channeled my inner mad scientist, experimenting with Soft Gel Matte Medium for his hair and shirt, giving it that wonderfully thick, almost sculptural feel. And for the background, I went wild with glass bead medium, swirling in hints of thalo green, aqua, and light blue, all shimmering with Japanese gold ink. It's a far cry from Schiele's typically stark, almost clinical white background!
Looking at the original, you can't help but feel a sense of intensity, maybe even a bit of weariness. I decided to give Egon a break, a little moment of… elevation. He looks like he's finally chilling out, maybe enjoying the creative inspiration that cannabis can sometimes bring. I almost called it 'Dude's Baked,' but 'Self-Portrait with Elevated Head' felt a little more… refined. 😉
This piece is a celebration of Schiele's genius, reimagined through a contemporary lens. It's about taking something classic and giving it a modern twist, a little bit of humor, and a whole lot of texture. What do you think?
