The Story πŸ’€

At Bone Boutique, transparency, respect, and a strict zero-waste philosophy guide every specimen we process. The Florida Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus) is a heavily armor-plated predator of our southern waterways and a prized catch for local food. Rather than allowing the remarkable anatomy of this sportfish to be discarded following the harvest, we stepped in to ensure every part of the specimen is fully utilized and honored through Tangible Conservation.

We brought these prehistoric, ganoid scales to our studio workbench to undergo our precise processing methods. Each scale has been meticulously cleaned, sanitized, and prepared right here in the studio, transforming a localized food-harvest byproduct into a premium, sustainable supply of raw sculptural art.

The Composition

  • The Specimens: Genuine, ethically salvaged, and food-harvested Florida Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus) scales, sold loose by the ounce.

  • The Palette: A pristine, bright studio-white that completely transforms the natural look of the fish into an elegant, porcelain-like material.

  • The Anatomy: Prehistoric, diamond-shaped ganoid armor scales. Thanks to our meticulous studio cleaning process, these durable scales showcase stunning, organic textures and sharp, distinct serrations that look almost like fossilized flower petals or carved ivory leaves.

  • The Profile: Incredibly lightweight, visually delicate, yet structurally rigid and solid. Measured out and packaged cleanly by weight (per ounce).

Display & Decor

While these raw materials are destined for the artist’s bench rather than the mantle, their versatility makes them an exceptional addition to any creative layout. These armor plates serve as high-impact components for high-end jewelry making, intricate mixed-media canvas work, mosaic art, or embedded within captivating resin pours. Their natural, shifting brilliance pairs beautifully alongside raw metallic wires, dark contrasting woods, or minimalist studio backgrounds where their iridescent sheen can truly take center stage.
