The Prehistoric Orchid.

In the studio, we find that the most complex beauty often comes from the smallest fragments. This miniature sculpture is a study in "bone botany"—a reimagining of the aquatic world as a delicate, blooming orchid. Built into a 2x4-inch hand-gilded "cradle" frame, this piece features a complex arrangement of salvaged Florida fish bones, including the structural elements of Catfish, Puffer Fish, and Longnose Gar.

Inspired by the intricate layers of a tropical orchid, the "bloom" takes up the entire panel, creating a high-contrast, sculptural focal point. Every element has been reclaimed from the Florida landscape, transitioning from the water to a permanent, gilded sanctuary. This is a redemptive tribute to the unseen geometry of nature, preserved as a one-of-a-kind artifact.

The Composition

A fragile, high-impact sculpture that blends the ancient resilience of Florida fish with the delicate form of a botanical bloom.

  • The Bones: A curated arrangement of ethically salvaged Catfish, Puffer Fish, and Florida Longnose Gar bones and scales.

  • The Frame: A 2x4-inch hand-painted gold "cradle" frame (repurposed miniature canvas).

  • Display: Features a small hook on the back for wall mounting. (Easel shown for display purposes only).

  • Authenticity: Includes a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity by Michele Moore.

The Curator’s Corner

The "Prehistoric Orchid" is designed for the collector of small, high-impact curiosities. Its petite size—fitting comfortably in the palm of your hand—makes it an ideal "discovery piece" for a gallery wall, a bookshelf, or a quiet corner of a study. Because it utilizes the natural ivory tones of bone against a deep black and gold background, it offers a sophisticated "Florida Gothic" aesthetic.

Note on Handling: This is an exceptionally delicate fine art piece. We recommend hanging it in a safe, low-traffic area to preserve the fragile skeletal petals. It is best displayed on a wall where its intricate geometry can be admired without the risk of being bumped.
