The Salford North Port FL Stop: Naturally Weathered Finds & The Sudden Salvage

At Bone Boutique, our community is our greatest archive. This journey began with a call from a fellow North Port business owner at Flake it Now. She’d spotted a struck rabbit in front of her home, and while we can’t always reach every specimen before nature—or the elements—claim them, her call was a reminder of why we do this.

But there was a second layer to this trip. Her son, a seasoned hiker who has traversed 29 states, had a small collection of naturally weathered bones during his travels. These were "pre-curated" by the elements—sun-bleached and void of organic material—ready for a new life at the Moore Museum.

The Reality of the Roadside

When I arrived the next day to collect the hiker's gifts, I found that the rabbit from the day before was still there. In the world of Wearable Conservation, timing is everything. Thankfully, the specimen was still intact and unclaimed by scavengers.

I’ve spent years refining my professional salvage process. It isn't a lifestyle I recommend for everyone, but it is a necessary part of transforming tragedy into treasure. I pulled over to perform the retrieval, relying on my "Death Kit"—a repurposed disinfectant wipes container I’ve upcycled to hold my essential bags and gloves.

From the Bag to the Bucket

The video below picks up right as I arrived back at the studio. I wanted to capture the raw, real-time transition of a specimen moving from the roadside bag into the first stage of the "whitening dance."

Sustainable Luxury: Accessible to All

Moments like the Salford Stop are why we’ve chosen to eliminate the "middleman." By moving away from high-commission galleries and expensive trade shows, we keep our overhead low and our art accessible. Whether it’s a gifted hiker’s find or a professional roadside salvage, the value lies in the hours of labor and the years of care we provide in the studio—not in a retail markup on a carcass.

We believe true luxury is thoughtful, artistic, and deeply rooted in the natural world. Thank you for being part of this "Driveway Revolution" and supporting the Moore Museum’s mission to honor every life we encounter.

From the Studio to the Driveway: The Revolution Continues

While the "whitening dance" happens behind the scenes here at the Moore Museum, the ultimate goal of Wearable Conservation is to get these stories into the hands of our community. This is why we’ve moved away from the traditional gallery model and embraced a "Driveway Revolution."

This philosophy is what led to the birth of the North Port Art Crawl.

What started as a simple idea—bringing art directly to the people where they live—has grown into a city-wide movement. The Art Crawl isn't just a market; it’s a celebration of local creators, sustainable practices, and the unique spirit of North Port. When you visit a stop on the Crawl, you aren’t just buying a piece of jewelry; you’re stepping into the workspace and the world of the artist.

Want to see the "Salford Stop" specimens in person? Our next event is just around the corner. I’ve documented the full journey of how the Art Crawl began and how you can join us for the next "Driveway Revolution" stop.
